Recognizing that basin transfers are always controversial, this magazine believes the gentleman’s idea is worthy of sharing. The Hamill family has been ranching in Colorado for more than 100 years, and Jake Hamill has experience in range water management and irrigation systems and has served on a board for weather modification. on a board for weather modification. His experience with agriculture, water, and the use of the natural landscape has brought forth a new idea: using water from the eastern slope of the Continental Divide to ease the shortage of water in the southwestern states. One could divert water from the Yellowstone River basin via gravity through a tunnel in the Continental Divide, then convey it downhill to Flaming Gorge Reservoir, south of Green River, Wyoming. Check out our article on Preston Pierce of Duke Energy, pumping new life into the bad creek pumped storage project from our April issue.More than 30 years ago, Duke Energy Corporation built the Bad Creek Pumped Storage Project in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains to store energy from its nuclear power plants and other baseload resources. The company just completed upgrades to the Bad Creek hydro project to increase its capacity from 1,360 to 1,680 megawatts (MW). Now that the plant is up for relicensing, Duke Energy is considering adding an additional powerhouse that would roughly double the capacity of the existing facility. The project would require the construction of a second underground powerhouse that would be the first in the nation to use variable-speed generators to increase efficiency.
